Ra-Ra-Ruffles!

119614_0687

So ruffles were created to hide the flaws?  Well, I don’t believe so, however it is an added bonus that sometimes a ruffle dress can be a lifesaver at times when we may have exerted ourselves or plan on doing so.  Ladies take note.  Yes it is far easier to get away with a ruffley skirt or dress as opposed to an ultra tight waist cinching body con.  All that sucking in is sooo hard! With Summer here (well… it is outside my window!)  it’s time to get girly and embrace the ruffle.  Although it’s not a look suited to all body shapes, as Vera Farmiga highlighted at this years Oscars wearing Marchesa, it can be adapted quite easily.  RareFashion.co.uk’s new Spring Summer range is packed with so many gorgeous girly ruffles your bound to find the ruffle of your dreams!

-3

For those of you not ready to go full on ruffle take a look at this cute tiered top.  Perfect for Summer and beautifully feminine.  Just add shorts and flip flops!  €34!

-2

This girly pastel dress is perfect for all things Summer whether it’s an outdoor bbq or a night out with the girls!  At €45 we are saying yes please!  Pair this lovely with nude booties and your ready to go!

-4

I can’t get enough of Rare’s new collections and I’ll definitely be adding this to my wardrobe.  A fab strapless, tiered white dress.  At €61 you won’t feel too bad when Summer is over!  Be careful though, it’s very…. white!

-1

Check out this little cutie.  A ruffle skirt with cinched in waist for those of you who would like to combine both trends!  This dress is so versatile and costs just €60! Pumps, flops or killer heels, this dress can accompany all three.  Wear it with a fab cardi, cool pashmina or simply on its own!

VIP style awards…

It is the most stylish event on the Irish Fashion Calendar and the socialites and stars did not disappoint!

Taking their cue from Hollywood… the stars that got it right on the night kept the dresses simple and elegant, accessories to a minimum and barely there makeup.

You’ll remember from The Oscars, that bangles and chandelier earrings were the must-haves for jewellery, while statement necklaces were nowhere to be seen, gold and neutral hues ruled the red carpet and hair and makeup was minimalist.  Well, the VIP Style Awards certainly followed suit.

-1

Total Xposure contestant and Assets model Ruth O’Neill looked beautiful (it’d be hard for her not to!), the dress reminded me of the paired back subtlety of Kate Winslets’ Yves Saint Laurent dress at The Oscars. It was simple and classic… if a little bit old for her.  Although it could have done with a bit of an iron before she left her house!

-2

And can we say va-va voom… Glenda Gilson is certainly no wallflower, and with her private life recently being splashed all over the press it was great to see her basically stick two fingers up to the world and dress to kill!  She looked sensational in a bejeweled red dress with cut-out detailing and won the most stylish award!  Refreshingly she really sticks to her own rock-chic style while presenting on Xpose, wearing jeans, boots, rocker t-shirts, leather jackets etc.  She is true to her own style which makes her deservedly most stylish of the year in my eyes too.

There was one big trend that a few stars picked up on, which is the underwear/outerwear trend that is everywhere on the catwalk and high-street this season!

-3-4

Sinead Desmond kept the lace overlay quite subtle and feminine, which is why she pulled it off superbly, and with a daring neckline the dress was made more exciting and reminiscent of a corset vibe.

But other guests who attempted the lace look weren’t so successful, the lace was either too dark, too much, or too heavy and they ended up looking more like they had been caught up in Spiderman’s web, than his love interest, heroine Mary Jane.

-5

Yes, there are always a few misses at these events too and unfortunately the beautiful Rachel Kavanagh was another guest who got it wrong.  It firstly was something I would expect to see on a mother of the bride, or at least someone forty+ years Rachel’s senior.  The kimono style print and matching wrap-over was reminiscent of a 60’s housewife’s nightwear, and for someone so young and pretty it was a pity to see her drown herself in this outfit.

-9-10

Anna Daly looked sensational… talk about hitting all the trends in one!  Ruffles down the train (but subtle), the gold hue ivory worked perfectly against her skin tone, and the unique butterfly/waistcoat effect on the bodice of the dress as well as the open back with jeweled spaghetti strap details, made it a statement number!  With the dress having enough detail she kept jewellery to a minimum with just one big bangle.  According to one Irish paper she had actually recycled her wedding dress for the event… well talk about recession proof and being ahead of the times!  Top marks.

-4But the star that stole the show in the style stakes was adopted Irish star, Michelle Heaton… a dress stunning enough to be seen on The Oscars red carpet.  (In fact it was nicer than most of The Oscar dresses we saw!)

The dress flowed in a teal blue chiffon with crystal cap sleeves and small crystal belt detail, she kept the accessories to a minimum and let the dress do the talking!  Her hairstyle was inspired by old Hollywood glamour, with sweeping waves and a side parting, and she also kept her makeup very natural and let her true beauty shine.  Although she arrived with her friend Katie Price, who was hounded by the paparazzi, it was Michelle’s timeless look that stole the show!

Littlewoods Look of the Week – Flower Power!

-1

Floral prints are everywhere this season and we like to think it’s a nod of a long hot summer to come! Possibly wishful thinking but we live in hope.  We saw floral prints hit the runways many times over February and three designers that spring to mind are Diane Von Furstenburg, Peter Som and Anna Sui.  Images below are from the Peter Som Spring/Summer 10 collection.

Should your budget not stretch that far then Littlewoods have this pretty flirty floral take on the trend.  The dress, from Love Label, also comes in the form of cute culottes with shorts being another trend!  See our previous post on Trends from NYFW.  Priced at only €59 you can’t go wrong!  Love Label at Littlewoods have a fantastic collection of floral designs with 80′s (ish) tees, shorts, dresses and shirts, none of which will leave you broke!

If you have great pins gladiators will work so well with the dress giving it a festival vibe… roll on the summer!

Nude Notes at the IFTAS

Nude Notes…

The Irish females shone the fashion flag last night at the IFTAS… taking inspiration from our US counterparts, the best dressed of the night were those that stuck with the top trend of Spring/Summer 2010 in nude and neutral colours. Notoriously hard for Irish skin-tones to pull off, but subtle glows of tan made this trend more wearable, and even those that stayed natural managed to find a tone that complimented their paler skin.

-4

Call me a sucker for the Grecian trend… but it is one of those evening dress styles that will just never go out of fashion. Xpose’s Karen Koster wore a stunning gold-blush dress that was cut at the empire line, and allowed the material to drape down beautifully. She co-ordinated her cute headband with the detailing on the dress straps but kept accessories to a minimum and allowed the dress to do all the talking.

-5

Karen’s co-star Lisa Cannon also kept it neutral on the night, but it was far from boring in a curve-hugging, sparkly number with chiffon off–the-shoulder detail, and a small train down the back. With a matching sparkly box clutch, show-stopping earrings and a smile to match, she too was one of the most talked about red-carpet dresses on the night.

-6

Also keeping with the Grecian trend was ‘No Frontiers’ presenter Kathryn Thomas, she looked effortlessly ethereal in a one-shouldered empire line dress. The chandelier earrings balanced the look perfectly, although if I were she I would have lost the skinny gold headband, as it was slightly overkill on an already gorgeous look.

-7

Best actress nominee Charlene McKenna from hit Irish show ‘RAW’, looked sweet as pie in another one-shouldered number. The colour was absolutely stunning against her skin, however the dodgy flower strap and granny curtain print left much to be desired. Another star to keep accessories to a minimum with dainty pearl-drop earrings. If rumors are true we may be losing one of our best actresses to LA soon, and with her old Hollywood red carpet looks and the dash of red lippy she is sure to be a hit.

-8

Grainne Seoige went strapless in this subtle tiered dress, a vast improvement from the dowdy ‘debutante’ dress she wore to last years show. It is young, fresh and elegant… showing us that a simple dress can be made more interesting with statement cuff bracelet and dazzling drop earrings.

Next up is the VIP style awards soon (see my comments here on last years)… fingers crossed the socialites and fashion darlings of Ireland take note from our Celtic Stars and do the red-carpet proud.

See our post on last years IFTAS here.

Rodarte & Wang at New York Fashion Week

-4

Straight from Pier54, unassuming tourists were treated to Alexander Wang’s Autumn/Winter ’10 collection. The show was streamed onto screens in Times Square that had the models storming down the catwalk in Wang’s latest collection. The Wall St banker aesthetic juxtaposed against the mantra of the gypsies is a statement to the tough economic times we are living in but also a rebellion against the banks restraints on creativity. Certainly no restraints were visible from any of the New York Fashion Week shows.

Wang had a strong vision for this collection: “I wanted this season to have this buttoned up, strict pristine feeling in the suiting. It’s well-tailored men’s jacket but taking that idea and not make it boring, dated and conservative. It’s the silhouette of kind of making the shoulders really tight and then longer in the sleeves so that it goes past the hands and taking off all the buttons off the jacket so that it almost becomes like a layering piece like a cardigan. Then taking the jacket from the top and using it as a skirt, the lapel and using it as a bra top.”

-5

The texture most visible was ‘velour du jour’, velvet pieces for every occasion that could be carried from day into night. Deconstructed suits, capes reminiscent of hippies and his classic chiffon mixed dresses made this collection an enviable one. For such a young and new designer, the others should be shaking in their Prada boots. Images above of Wang‘s collection – below Rodarte.

-6-7-8

Rodarte, the spearheads of romanticism didn’t disappoint either. The Mulleavy sisters built their collection on the idea of sleepwalking which carried a dream like quality around the room. They said that their collection had been influenced by a recent drive through Mexico and the town of Ciudad Juárez disturbed them.

The models looked like a haze floating down the catwalk in crisp whites and creams mixed with colourful print work. Their take on the wool jumper added a fresh feel to the worn out designs that have come before them – wrapping the fabric from around the neck to under the arm. The Mexican ethnicity was visible in tasselled skirts and patchwork, and their lace leggings are sure to reverberate in collections to come. Nicholas Kirkwood’s heels set off the collection perfectly and the dark washed hair of the models slicked back added the Rodarte edge to a more feminine collection. The show ended with a white lace gown, resembling a distressed wedding dress – A perfect day for a Rodarte wedding.

Getting to Know Designer Tony Cohen & his 2010 Collection

ABOUT-THE-DESIGNER.jpg (JPEG Image, 470x767 pixels)_1266480785460ABOUT-THE-DESIGNER.jpg (JPEG Image, 470x767 pixels)_1266480762748

Designer Tony Cohen was born and raised in Amsterdam growing up in the heart of the city.  During the 50′s and up to the 70′s his grandmother sold second hand clothing at the iconic Waterloo Plein (still exists today) in Amsterdam.  This had a major influence on Cohen as he spent most of his childhood there.

Cohen comes from a family steeped in fashion with his father representing several fashion houses, it’s no surprise that he himself went down this road.  Having said that he did take a detour in his early 20′s when he became a professional baseball player – how random!  Not long after this he returned to the world of fashion.  His mother claims he had an abnormal interest in clothing from a young age.

Cohen worked as a designer for a few fashion houses before starting his own label TONYCOHEN in 2005 managing to make an immediate impact.  He is  now a regular at New York Fashion week and for the most part each year is the only Dutch designer showing in the official show tents.

2Love1602LoveDress 210

TONYCOHEN is now retailing through over 300 stores worldwide being picked up by International buyers of which are available in Ireland – BT2 and Harvey Nichols.

So what can we expect from TONYCOHEN‘s Spring/Summer 2010?  Well, the show on the Bryan Park runway was a mix somewhere between the hard and the soft with delicate fabrics such as silks, Japanese polyesters and leathers combining to make strong silhouettes.  There was a lot of asymmetric detailing leaving his pieces to look different from all angles.  We saw silk fringes emphasizing shoulders all mostly set in a monochrome colouring of pale and dusty pinks, blues and ivory.  Every now and then there was a punch of electric amazon prints to shock. Elegant and edgy would be the best way to describe the collection.

2LoveDress1602Love105

Let’s not forget 2Love TONYCOHEN – the Spring/Summer 2010 feel for this label (available at BT2) showcased a delicate mix of cottons and silks with this diffusion line using draping, tying bows on shoulder lines and embellishments in the style of feathers made out of cotton and silk organza. Muted and electric colours both made an appearance and we at wow.ie absolutely LOVE this collection and it’s easy to wear feel.  All pictured from the 2Love TONYCOHEN collection and available at BT2.
