Candy coloured jeans from M&S and Religion

The glimmer of hope we had for a delightful Summer seems to have faded almost as quickly as it arrived. But, I?m determined not to lose hope and have dug out some new sorbet-coloured lovelies to keep the spirits up.
Yes, coloured jeans are back again, only this time they are more candy-coloured and cute, rather than loud and brash, making them perfect for the summer months. Yellow, pink, green or blue; in terms of colour just think pastel rather than primary.
Agyness Deyn was spotted rocking a pair of washed out red jeans in New York recently, while Katy Perry is also a fan of sorbet colours for the summer.
What’s perfect about these babies is that they ooze Summer style but you?re not going to look like an idiot when the skies open! Thrown on a pair of coloured jeans with a plain t-shirt and pumps or gladiator flats for the daytime, and glam it up for the evening with a sexy pair of wedges or contrasting platforms.
The yellow M&S ones for €35 are too cute though perhaps Religions blue skinnies are a little more practical (€60).

Kick or Keep for 2009

Gladiator Sandals
- Kick
We never thought that Russell Crowe would be the inspiration for one of the most popular trends last year. Well he was! And the gladiator sandal was the shoe of choice whether flat or heeled versions. While we loved them at the time, they scream 2008 so steer clear this season.

Boyfriend Jeans - Keep
Love them or hate them, boyfriend jeans definitely made their mark on 2008. Thanks in part to Mrs. Tom Cruise who was rarely seen without them. don’t ditch your skinnies just yet, but looser, more relaxed styles are making a major comeback for Spring/Summer. (See Topshop/Versace Post)

Headband
- Kick

I never really got this. Wearing an elastic type thingy across-the-forehead headband in the manner of Rambo. Nicole Richie can be held responsible for the revival of this trend but with head sticking out, elastic sliding up-it’s best left to those that a) don’t move/work, b) have a hairdresser on hand to fix it every time you breath out!

Crazy Heels - Keep

2008 was the year heels soared to new heights Shoes are set to reach even more dizzying heights with platforms holding their own. The old adage ?no pain, no gain? has never been more relevant as Spring/Summer 09 sees shoes rival stilts? (and models tumbled to new lows).

Worth a Wander – Epoch

I was wandering around the city a couple of days ago when I stumbled upon a recently opened vintage store. As you all know my passion for vintage I was understandably excited! Called Epoch, they pride themselves on carrying a huge range of vintage, recycled, sweatshop-free and independently designed clothing and accessories for men and women.

With recession hype reaching fever pitch, ?throwaway? fashion is now frowned upon. While we still want our clothes to be fun and affordable there is a consciousness and sense of responsibility about where and how clothes are made. Epoch offer a cool alternative to mass-produced Penny’s type retailers on the high-street (although there’s definitely a place for those too).

As well as the vintage on offer they?ve got a good selection of new clothing that’s unique and ethically produced.

They?re located in Crow St. Bazaar, Temple Bar or check them out online at

Alexa Chung-Heralds the Return of The Geek..

Alexa Chung has been steadily rising as a fashion icon for a couple of years now, but 2008 was her biggest year yet. Featured on the cover of Elle and presenting TV shows Frock Me with Henry Holland and Gok Wan’s Fashion Fix, she has been welcomed with open arms into the fashion set. Her quirky, understated wardrobe has brought on a geek revival with glasses, blazers, loafers and satchels all making a strong comeback.
Her appearance at all the major catwalk shows obviously paid off and her confidence in her choices allows her to carry off outfits that might look seriously uncool on another girl. She’s fast becoming the British darling, sporting all the hot labels including Luella, Mulberry, PPQ and Arrogant Cat. I for one am looking forward to seeing what trend she latches on to and revives in 2009?
Alexa is pictured sporting a comfy pair of brogues and making it work!

Band T-shirts – Effortlessly Cool

Celebrities have to think about what they wear every morning. Now while it’s obvious that some don’t think at all (Britney of late anyone?) some of them have come up with their own fail safe, reliable look that can be called upon at any moment and will work for most occasions (red carpet aside). Something that’s cool and will keep them off the “Worst Dressed? page yet suggests that minimal effort was put into the planning.

So, what’s this genius formula that may come in handy over the festive season when time, motivation and energy for outfit planning is likely to reach a new low? It’s the band t-shirt! Whether it’s Mary-Kate Olen sporting ?Frankie says Relax?, Sarah Harding wearing David Bowie or Agyness Deyn with The Clash emblazoned across her chest, the band t-shirt looks effortless and actually is!
It’s so easy (and comfy) to wear and can be dressed up or down depending on your mood. While the celebs generally opt for skinny jeans, you can tuck it into a pencil skirt, wear with coloured harem pants (like Agy), with hot pants during the Summer or leather trousers for the ultimate groupie look.
Unkempt hair is a bonus, and accessories that are practical as well as stylish fit this look best. Go vintage for an authentic look or check out http://www.sugarbullets.co.uk/index.php for a massive range. Just be prepared to say what your favourite album, track etc is?a little research is advisable if you don’t recognise the face on your chest!

Leigh Tucker for Dunnes Stores

This season saw Dunnes Stores first ever designer collaboration with Leigh Tucker taking the plunge. With both parents involved in the fashion industry (designer Brian Tucker and retailer Billie Taylor), style is in her blood! Her own label Leighlee is one of my favourites for beautiful, feminine clothing using the best and most luxurious fabrics.

Leighlee has been around for eight years and grown steadily in popularity. Stocked in boutiques across Ireland, England, Los Angeles, Greece, Italy and Japan, it’s a firm favourite in fashion circles making Tucker the obvious choice to inject a bit of cool into the Dunnes brand.
I love the “Car Coat? and the blue sheer cowl neck blouse is a perfect way to give life to a predominantly black collection.
This collection is available at fifteen stores nationwide.

Gwyneth Paltrow – Most Improved in ’08?

Gwyneth Paltrow has always been beautiful. Willowy and blonde, she was the epitome of Californian perfection but she was never a style icon; until recently. With all her yoga and macro-biotic nonsense, there’s an annoying smugness that leads people to either love her or loathe her. I fell into the latter category until she started rocking the red carpet this year with a fab body and countless stunning looks.

2008 has seen Paltrow take a massive leap from soccer Mom to fully-fledged fashion Goddess. Stella McCartney, Balmain, Lanvin, Gucci-they?ve all had a shot dressing her this year and I?m hoping this is just a preview of what’s to come. I?ve selected a few snaps of the outfits I loved on her. She wins the prize for ?Best Improved? in 2008!

Gucci Boots at Zara Prices

Frida Gianni bucked the trend for minimalism this Autumn/Winter 08 when she designed a super-luxe, multi layered boho collection with emphasis on detail. Anything fringed, fur, shaggy, printy or peasanty; but coupled with the usual polish and sophistication that we’ve come to expect under the label Gucci.
Accessories reigned supreme with chunky necklaces, carpet bags and multiple belts all featured. My personal favourite are these cool black, fringed boots. A little less boho and a little more rock chick, these will add an edge to any outfit. The Gucci price tag however, is not so appealing. Zara, my favourite high-fashion, high street store have produced a pair so similar it may be considered criminal to get the real deal. Check them out here!
Go for an unexpected twist by pairing them with a slinky dress or keep them more rock chick with leggings or skinny jeans?

(Marky Ramone’s new collection would work well with this look also)
