It’s that time of year when we’ll be availing of a hose down at the local salon or even in our own home! Fake tan is great if it’s done right, if it’s not it is a total disaster you’ll have to live with for at least five days. The best thing to do is go on a recommendation but try to get the name or at least a description of the girl that sprayed and request her when you are booking! Generally if something sounds too good to be true it is. I’ve tried a lot of the cheaper brands out there and trust me the results were not favourable. I most certainly would not even consider them for our salon. I find Fake Bake and Sun FX to be the better two tans on the market with Fake Bake being the No. 1!
However, the same spray tan can look different on different skin types so it’s always best to do a trial tan if it’s for your wedding. Tans will pick up on your own natural pigment. Rarely people opt to not have their face tanned but I would always suggest they get their face done to avoid a two tone look, it also gives you an all over healthy glow. Usually it’s best to get your tan done two days before your event. If you only want a bare hint of tan explain that clearly to the therapist and at the time of booking. The list below should ensure you don’t have any disasters this December:
1. Exfoliate your body coming up to the day of the spray paying particular attention to dry patches, if dry skin flakes off so will the tan attached to it leaving you patchy so get rid first!
2. Do not exfoliate your body on the day of tanning if you use an oil based exfoliant as it will leave an oily residue on the skin acting as a barrier to the tan.
3. Moisturise your body every day coming up to the tan and twice a day on dry patches. Bra straps tend to rub and create dry skin you don’t see until you’ve been sprayed so moisturise there heavily too.
4. DO NOT moisturise your body on the day of the spray as it will act as a barrier to the tan.
5. Do not use deodorant or perfumes on your skin as they will react to the tan usually turning green. (if you are coming straight from work and used product that morning you’ll be ok, the ‘green’ washes away when you shower but not so if you use them just before spraying)
6. Do not shave your legs the day of spraying, shave the day before or day after. If you shave on the day of tanning you’ll end up with tiny speckles as tan will fill your pores which will be open if you’ve just shaved.
7. Always have a nail varnish on your fingers and toes. Nails are porous and will absorb the tan turning yellow.
8. After you’ve dried put on only loose clothing not including a loose vest as it could mark. Best to put on a mans t-shirt or hoody with baggy tracksuit bottoms and flip flops. Take your footwear off asap so it doesn’t mark. Don’t put your bag on your shoulder leaving the salon – it will mark!
9. Use wipes to wipe the palm of your hands over the course of the evening. Without realising it you’ll run your hands through your hair or lean your face in your hands and they’ll pick up tan.
10. DO NOT GET WET. If it’s raining park beside the door and use a brolly. Roll up the ends of your trackie when leaving after tan, if they are wet they’ll mark your feet and legs.
11. When you get home put on your baggy full length slieve and leg pjs. Wear these to bed so you don’t sleep on your hands messing up the tan.
12. Shower as normal, pat yourself dry and moisturise your body everyday – twice a day on dry patches. The light tan moisturisers could be used every second day towards the end of the week to extend your tan a little longer.
If you are not happy with your tan call back to the salon and ask to speak with a manager. They should know what the problem is by looking at the tan and help to sort you out. Try to go more Carrie Underwood pictured with a perfect tan and less Jodie Marsh, no picture necessary!!
